Applicants to UK Universities Need to Register Separately for ‘IELTS for UKVI’ Language Test; www.ielts.org

If you are planning to pursue any educational degree from UK, you will have to give a separate language exam called IELTS for UKVI. General IELTS will not be accepted at UK universities and colleges anymore. It is a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). This means that IELTS can be used to prove your English language abilities in support of a UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) application. The pattern of test and the scoring are exactly the same as IELTS and involves Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking sections. However, the difference lies in the TRF (Test Report Form). For the IELTS for UKVI you will receive a different SELT Reference Number that can be used for the UK Home Office. UKVI test is available only at those test centers that meet the administrative requirements outlined by the UK Home Office.

This test is for test takers wishing to study in UK at undergraduate or postgraduate levels and for those seeking professional registration in the UK. For different purposes, there are different types within IELTS for UKIV. Depending on your requirement, you will have to register for either one of the type. Test takers must note that the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the General Medical Council in UK accept IELTS and IELTS for UKVI both. Validity: Your IELTS results are valid for two years. Ensure your test date is recent enough that the score remains valid through your anticipated start date.
Exemptions: You may be exempt from the IELTS requirement if you have completed previous education (like a degree or high school) in an English-speaking country or an English-medium institution. Always check the “International Admissions” or “English Language Requirements” section on your target university’s website to see if you qualify for a waiver.
Pre-Sessional English: If you fall slightly short of the required score (e.g., you have a 6.0 but need a 6.5), many universities will offer a “Pre-sessional English” course. Completing this course allows you to meet the language requirement without retaking the full IELTS exam.

Don’t Wait: Since the digital format (IELTS on Computer) provides results in just 1–5 days, you don’t need to worry about long waiting times. However, taking the test early gives you a buffer in case you need to use the One Skill Retake (OSR) option to boost a single section.
