Applicants to UK Universities Need to Register Separately for ‘IELTS for UKVI’ Language Test; www.ielts.org

If you are planning to pursue any educational degree from UK, you will have to give a separate language exam called IELTS for UKVI. General IELTS will not be accepted at UK universities and colleges anymore. It is a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). This means that IELTS can be used to prove your English language abilities in support of a UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) application. The pattern of test and the scoring are exactly the same as IELTS and involves ListeningReadingWriting and Speaking sections. However, the difference lies in the TRF (Test Report Form). For the IELTS for UKVI you will receive a different SELT Reference Number that can be used for the UK Home Office. UKVI test is available only at those test centers that meet the administrative requirements outlined by the UK Home Office.

This test is for test takers wishing to study in UK at undergraduate or postgraduate levels and for those seeking professional registration in the UK. For different purposes, there are different types within IELTS for UKIV. Depending on your requirement, you will have to register for either one of the type. Consult the following table for reference.

Test takers must note that the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the General Medical Council in UK accept IELTS and IELTS for UKVI both. Hence, doctors, dentists, nurses and midwives can use both IELTS or IELTS for UKVI result for entry and registration. Applicants to UK Universities; www.ielts.org

In the UK, IELTS requirements are set by individual universities and specific programs rather than a single national standard. However, understanding the general expectations and the role of the visa process will help you plan your application effectively.

Typical IELTS Requirements

Most UK universities set their requirements based on the intensity of the course. Here is a general breakdown of what to expect:

Level of Study Typical Overall Score Typical Individual Band Minimum
Undergraduate 6.0 – 6.5 5.5 – 6.0
Postgraduate 6.5 – 7.0 6.0 – 6.5
Top-Tier / Competitive 7.0 – 7.5 6.5 – 7.0
Foundation / Pathway 5.0 – 5.5 4.5 – 5.0

Critical Distinction: Which IELTS do you need?

For UK university applications, there are two distinct requirements you must satisfy:

  1. University Admission Requirements: Almost all UK universities accept IELTS Academic. You can typically submit a standard IELTS Academic result for your course application.

  2. UKVI (Visa) Requirements: When you apply for your Student Visa, the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) office has specific rules.

    • If your university is a “Higher Education Provider” with a track record of compliance, they can often vouch for your English proficiency based on the test you submitted for admission.

    • If you are unsure or if the university specifically requests it, taking the IELTS for UKVI (Academic) is the “safer” choice. It is accepted by all universities and is guaranteed to meet the Home Office’s requirements for your visa.
