Core Requirements for All Candidates

Before initiating registration, every candidate must be prepared with the following essential items:

• National Identification Number (NIN): The NIN is now a compulsory requirement for all NECO registrations. Candidates without a NIN must obtain one from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) before attempting to register.

• Biodata Accuracy: Candidates must ensure that their full legal name, date of birth, state of origin, and local government area match exactly what is on their birth certificate or other official documentation.

• Passport Photograph: A recent, clear passport photograph is required. For internal (school) candidates, this must often be taken in the school uniform. Red backgrounds are generally discouraged; white or blue backgrounds are standard.

• Subject Selection: Depending on the examination type, candidates must select their subjects within the permitted range (typically 8 to 9 subjects for the SSCE).

The registration process differs significantly depending on whether you are a school-based candidate or a private candidate.

1. Internal (School) Candidates

These are students currently in their final year of secondary school. Their registration is handled collectively by their school administration.

• Role of the School: Schools are responsible for creating an account on the official NECO SSCE Internal portal, purchasing registration quotas, and entering candidates’ biodata.

• The Process: 1. Portal Access: Schools claim their online portal using an official school email address.

  2. Data Collection: Schools collect biodata (including NIN) and passport photos from students.

  3. Offline Registration: Schools often use an offline software application provided by NECO to capture data and biometrics locally before uploading the batch to the portal.

  4. Payment: Schools pay registration fees via the NECO Treasury Single Account (TSA) on the Remita platform.

  5. Validation: Once data is uploaded, a registration number is generated. Schools must verify all details to avoid “Non-Validation” penalties.

2. Private (External/GCE) Candidates

These are individuals not currently enrolled in a school, such as school leavers or those retaking the examination.

• Individual Responsibility: Private candidates are responsible for their own registration.

• The Process:

  1. Purchase Token: Candidates purchase a registration PIN/Token from designated banks, NECO offices, or authorized online platforms.

  2. Account Creation: Visit the official NECO external portal, create an account using a valid email and phone number.

  3. Online Registration: Log in with the token, enter personal details, select subjects, and upload the passport photograph.

  4. Biometric Capture: Candidates must visit an accredited NECO registration center to have their fingerprints captured.

  5. Finalization: After biometrics, candidates must print their examination photocard, which is required for entry into the examination hall.

Crucial Guidelines and Administrative Details

• Registration Deadlines: NECO sets strict deadlines for both normal and late registration. In 2026, for example, internal registration periods concluded in late May. There is typically no extension for these deadlines.

• Correction of Data: Accuracy is paramount. Errors in names, subjects, or other biodata discovered after submission often carry a heavy “Non-Validation” penalty fee (e.g., ₦10,000).

• Special Needs Candidates: Candidates with special needs—such as those with low vision, hearing impairments, or autism—must have their specific needs correctly indicated during the biodata entry phase to ensure the Council can provide the necessary support.

• Payment Security: Always ensure that payments are made through official NECO payment channels (Remita). Keep the e-Receipt generated after payment as proof for transaction verification.

Important Tips for a Smooth Registration

• Begin Early: Do not wait until the final days of the registration window, as high traffic on the portals can lead to technical delays.

• Verify Before Submission: Print out the offline photocard (for school candidates) or review the online submission thoroughly before finalizing. Check spelling, date of birth, and subjects repeatedly.

• Retain Your Documents: After registration, keep your registration slip and photocard in a safe place. These are your “tickets” to the examination.

• Stay Informed: Follow official announcements via the NECO website or through your school administration for any updates regarding the exam format or scheduling.

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the  External Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results with 67.3 per cent pass. According to the results released, 57,114 candidates, representing 67.3%, passed with credits in five subjects, including Mathematics and English Language

Making the announcement, yesterday, in Minna, Niger State, NECO Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, said 1,209,703 candidates registered for the test, consisting of 636,327 males, representing 52.60 per cent and 573,376 females (47.39 per cent).

He explained that about 13,574 candidates were sanctioned for malpractice. Wushishi said: “The Council has a long-standing tradition of zero tolerance for malpractice. Thus, it can be noticed that the incidence in  dropped, compared with the figure of .

“Consequent upon the foregoing, four schools were recommended for de-recognition for two years due to their involvement in mass cheating and other unwholesome cases.

“Also, 29 supervisors were blacklisted for various offences ranging from poor supervision, insult to aiding and abetting during the examination.”

He advised candidate to check their results on www.neco gov.ng, imputing their registration numbers on the portal.

The NECO boss expressed satisfaction that conduct of this year’s examination had been satisfactorily adjudged by relevant stakeholders as best in recent years.

He continued: Number of candidates with special needs is 1,031, with the breakdown as follows: Ninety-eight with albinism, 177 with autism, 574 with hearing impairment and 107 visually impaired.

“Number of candidates, who made credit and above in English Language is 889,188, representing 74.89 per cent.
“Number of candidates who made credit and above in Mathematics is 929,140 representing 78.23 per cent.

“Number of candidates, who made five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics, is 727,864, representing 60.74 per cent. When compared to  SSCE (Internal) figures of 878,925 (71.64 per cent), there is a decrease of 10.9 per cent.”

A further breakdown shows: “Number of candidates, who made five credits and above irrespective of English Language and Mathematics is 1,011,457, representing 84.40 per cent. When compared to  SSCE (Internal) figures of 1,153,716 (94.04 per cent), there is a decrease of 9.64 per cent.

“Number of candidates involved in various forms of malpractice   is 13,594, representing 0.13 per cent, whereas 20,003, representing 1.63 per cent cases, were recorded.”

Wushihi concluded: “May I also seize the opportunity to announce that the backlog of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) certificates from will soon be ready for distribution to schools.”
