The University of Lagos, popularly known as UNILAG is one of the most prestigious federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It admits over 9,000 undergraduate students each year which is just about 10% of its applications during the UTME registration process.

1. All Three Campuses Are Located In The Same Area

The University of Lagos boasts of three campuses, its main campus is located in Akoka and its college of Medicine is located in Surulere. It also has a campus in Yaba. This was recently created.

However, despite having three functioning campuses, all three are located on the mainland area of Lagos which is quite incredible.

2. The University’s Radio Station Was The First Of Its Kind

The University of Lagos was the first University in Nigeria to own or start a radio station. The radio station aimed to aid in the education of students studying courses like mass communication and distance learning.

If you’ve ever listened to UNILAG 103.1 FM, then you should be aware that it is run entirely by the University of Lagos and that it was created in 2004.

The radio has helped expand the knowledge of the students in the University and provided them with experience and opportunities they would otherwise not have accessed.

3. The University Has Grown From Three Faculties To Twelve

The University Of Lagos started in 1962 with just three Faculties. These Faculties were the Faculty of commerce/ business administration which was eventually changed to the Faculty of Business and Social studies, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Law. At the moment, the University has grown tremendously from its humble beginnings in 1962.

Currently, the University boasts 14 academic units which are made up of 10 Faculties, a College and three schools. The college is the College of Medicine which houses Clinical sciences, Dental sciences, Medical Sciences and Pharmacy.

The schools include a school for Distant learning and The Centre For Human Rights and African Regional Integration. It also boasts of twelve Faculties which are the Faculties of Law, Pharmacy, Science, Social sciences, Arts, Clinical Services, Education, Engineering, Business Administration, Dental Sciences, Environmental Sciences.

4. The University of Lagos Holds A Special Scholarship Scheme

The University of Lagos offers scholarships to students both graduate and post-graduate if they meet their requirements. Despite having several scholarships and grants schemes, the University of Lagos has a special scholarship scheme of its own.

This scheme is funded by its endowment grants, which is sometimes up to 500 million Naira. The University grants more than 200 students scholarships every year from its special scholarship scheme.

5. It Is One Of The First Generation Universities In Nigeria

The University of Lagos is one of the first Universities in Nigeria. In 1948, the Ashby Commission recommended the creation of Universities in Nigeria. Five Universities were created. These were; The University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the University of Lagos.

Despite being one of the first Universities in Nigeria, The University of Lagos has consistently grown and proven to be one of the best tertiary institutions in the country. It occupied the spot as one of the top Universities in the world according to several publications. It currently occupies the spot as the second-best university in Nigeria.

6. The University’s Name Was Almost Changed In 2012

In the year 2012, the then President of Nigeria; President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan attempted to change the name of the University from the University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University. The idea was formed to honour Moshood Abiola who died in 1998 as a political prisoner.

This did not sit down well with students and the alumni body of the University. Several protests were carried out till the idea was set aside and the original name of the University remained.

7. The University Of Lagos Has Been Ranked In Several Top Publications

From Forbes to NUSAMA, the University of Lagos has been ranked as one of the top Universities in Africa and Nigeria.

In 2008, the National University Commission ( NUC) awarded the University as the best University in Nigeria. This was done at the Nigerian University System Annual Merit Award (NUSAMA).

In the year 2020, the University ranked third on Forbes Magazine as the third most productive African University in teaching entrepreneurial skills. She came behind the Universities of Cape Town and Makere.

8. The University Of Lagos Is The First University To Obtain A Television License

In the aspect of media, UNILAG has been a pioneer. From owning the first campus radio station to starting the first campus Television station, the University is constantly pushing the frontiers for its students.

In 2017, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the license to enable the University of Lagos to operate a functioning Television Station. The station was titled UnilagTV and is live on Channel 184, StarTimes Decoders.

The goal of the television station according to the University Management is to increase knowledge and experience for students and to provide fresh ideas to take television broadcasting in Nigeria to a new level.

9. The University Of Lagos Pays Its Students

The University Of Lagos does something exceptional by paying students who end the session with a CGPA of 4.5 and above with the sum of N50,000 ( Fifty thousand naira). The amount is paid to the student at the end of every session provided the student meets the requirement of being in the first class with a 4.5 CGPA.

If a student remains on a first-class CGPA throughout his or her academic years, the University of Lagos continues to pay the student the said amount at the end of each session.

This acts as a sort of incentive and inspiration to encourage students who take their students seriously and aim for academic excellence.

10. The University of Lagos has No Student Union Government

The Student Union Body acts as a voice of the students within the walls of the University. Nonetheless among several universities in Nigeria, the University of Lagos being one of these, the student union body is non-existent.

The student union body of the University of Lagos has been banned several times. However, its most recent ban was in 2016 following a series of student protests, ever since then the University operates without a student union government.
