Project description:
Context: Deaf people have lower educational qualifications and lower employment than hearing people, reporting isolation and exclusion which impact their development, engagement and mental health. Many d/Deaf people report lonely and challenging university experiences. 46% of d/Deaf students start university without support, lack targeted resources, with equality issues unmet.
Rationale: There is a lack of grounded, experiential research focusing on lived experiences of d/Deaf people as they navigate challenging HE environments. This interdisciplinary project seeks to tackle exclusion through people-powered change by exploring intersectional identities, and everyday experiences of society and space, to advance knowledge of how being d/Deaf is understood and contested.
Scope:
Probable aims: To identify experiences of d/Deaf students in Welsh universities exploring isolation, spatial and societal exclusion, and what facilitates positive experiences opening future possibilities.
Objectives:

  1. To explore the intersectional needs of students with multiple identities;
  2. To understand d/Deaf students’ everyday experiences of space and society;
  3. To develop a framework to support d/Deaf students in Welsh universities to better meet their educational, social and identity needs.

Research questions:

  • What are the unique, everyday life experiences of d/Deaf university students in Wales?
  • What then, are the barriers and enablers to a positive university experience for d/Deaf university students in Wales?

Eligibility

ESRC studentships are highly competitive. Candidates should have an excellent background in the social sciences, holding a first- or strong upper-second-class degree, or equivalent recognised by Swansea University (please consult https://www.swansea.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/entry-requirements/); applications from those also holding a relevant research training master’s degree (or an equivalent background in research training) will be considered for a ‘+3’ /PhD award.

English language requirements: if applicable, a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5 (with a score of no less than 6.5 in any individual component) or Swansea University-recognised equivalent is required.

A fully-funded Wales DTP studentship is available to both UK and international (including EU and EEA) students. All applicants will be eligible for a full award consisting of a maintenance stipend and payment of tuition fees at the UK research organisation rate. 5. PhD International Scholarships in New Tools for Sustainable Control of Liver Fluke in Ruminants

This PhD project aims to generate and use genomic data from liver fluke to develop a large panel of novel genetic markers for this parasite. These markers will be used to analyse seasonal variations in liver fluke population structure in sheep and cattle in different geographical locations in the UK, providing important insights into disease burden, infection transmission and the potential for emergence and spread of flukicide resistance. In addition, new “fluke forecasting” models will be developed and tested using data collected during the project, including parasite genetic data. This will enable better predictions of when and where liver fluke infection is likely to occur, leading to improved and sustainable control of this parasite, and ultimately better livestock health and productivity.
About the FoodBioSystems DTP
The FoodBioSystems Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) brings together six university partners: University of Reading, Cranfield University, University of Surrey, Queen’s University Belfast, Aberystwyth University, and Brunel University London. The Partnership’s vision is to develop the next generation of bioscientists with in-depth knowledge and technical expertise of food systems and biological processes across the Agri-Food system from pre-farm to post-fork. They will become the urgently needed experts – able to transform the food value chain and address challenges of sustainability, efficacy, authenticity and safety in food production systems whilst delivering better nutrition and concomitant health benefits for society. The DTP iscurrently advertising 36 projects. From these, it is expected 24 studentships will be awarded to the strongest application to start their studies in October.

Eligibility

This project would be suitable for students with a veterinary degree or a degree in biological sciences or a quantitative disciplines such as mathematics, physics or engineering. Demonstrated interest in the topic, for example through prior experience of working with parasites or related pathogens would be beneficial. Some experience of molecular laboratory settings, for example through undergraduate projects or placements, would be helpful. As the project involves genomics analysis and modelling components, demonstrated ability in these areas and interest in the use of those approaches would be advantageous.

Project description:
Different control design problems in power electronics, robotic locomotion, and agent-based models can be cast in terms of polynomial systems. That is, a set of algebraic equations representing the different design and system constraints for which we need to find suitable real solutions. In order to enable the implementation of optimal control policies, such polynomial systems need to be solved in real time, in a data-driven framework where the system itself is updated from real-time measurements.

This project focuses on algebraic and geometric aspects of polynomial systems and the study of effective solution methods with an outlook to applications in feedback control design.

The overarching goal of this project is to explore novel solution methods for polynomial systems by combining elements from applied algebraic geometry and symbolic computation, including tools from elimination theory, Groebner bases, resultants, and Sturm sequences, with efficient iterative methods in optimization.

By analysing the structure of polynomial systems arising in feedback control problems (such as pole placement, model predictive control, and switching control), we will develop an applied algebraic geometry methodology for the computation of control laws in real time.

Candidates must normally hold an undergraduate degree at 2.1 level or master’s degree with a minimum overall grade at ‘Merit’ (or Non-UK equivalent as defined by Swansea University).

10. Chemical Engineering: Swansea University Fully Funded Kess Ii Msc By Research Scholarship

Methyl-isoborneol (MIB) is a naturally occurring compound released in water when algae die off. Its occurrence in drinking water results in customer complaints and unsatisfaction due to the unpleasant taste that MIB imparts to the water. The raw water concentrations can reach up to 800 ng/L whilst the taste threshold concentrations are extremely low ranging from 4 to 15 ng/L depending on the individual. The current methods for MIB detection rely on complicated protocols that involve several steps including sampling, sample preparation (e.g. extraction), and off-site analysis using very expensive laboratory equipment making MIB analysis time-consuming, labour intensive, and expensive. Therefore, an alternative highly selective and sensitive method for in-situ detection of MIB at the ng/L levels is highly desirable.

This project will develop a single ultrafast biosensor for in-situ detection of MIB using various electrochemical methods. Low cost carbon sensor electrodes with properties of enhanced electron transfer and surface area will be fabricated using flexographic printing. More importantly, specific innovations are embodied in the novel implementation of non-conventional metal porphyrins as recognition elements. They will generate characteristic electrochemical signals upon interaction with MIB in water that are distinct from those caused by non-specific adsorption. This will provide an essential step towards label free, direct and easy-to-use in situ monitoring devices.

Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SMEs and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 40 credit award.

Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Engineering or a related subject.

Energy Safety Research Institute (ESRI) is working on the green nano materials to develop alternatives to costly and environmentally hazardous waterproof analogues. The existing waterproof coatings are made of Fluorocarbons that are bio-persistent and very expensive. The novel and green materials, developed by ESRI, are potentially valuable materials as they can be applied to variety of surfaces to make them environmentally friendly and non-hazardous (e.g. when in contact with skin).

The main purpose of this post is to develop green and environmentally friendly nanomaterials for variety of surfaces. The successful candidate will be expected to assist in the following areas: Identify the required surfaces, develop methods to apply the coatings, gathering, preparation and analysis of data, and present results.

The student will resolve the temporal and spatial evolution of the Gegham and Vardenis Highlands monogenetic fields (central and eastern Armenia), a region containing hundreds of poorly-studied Pleistocene – Holocene scoria cones and domes. Armenia, despite its small size, is the site of > 500 Quaternary volcanoes, many of them monogenetic. It is envisaged the student will have the opportunity to carry out fieldwork in Armenia, although some samples are already available in case of travel restrictions. The student will conduct high-precision 40Ar/39Ar dating, in order to build a detailed eruption chronology for the volcanic field. This project will take advantage of recent advances in 40Ar/39Ar dating made by the supervisory team, which mean traditionally difficult to date young lavas and mafic to intermediate pyroclasts can now be reliably dated, offering new possibilities to date samples previously thought undateable. In addition, the student will integrate cutting-edge imaging techniques (microCT, SEM) to investigate rock vesicularity and crystallinity, key indicators of the driving forces behind past eruptions, and crucial for understanding the nature of any future volcanism. Imaging can additionally be used to explore the effects of rock texture on 40Ar/39Ar dating, in order to further develop dating methods of traditionally difficult samples.

A comprehensive training programme will be provided comprising both specialist scientific training and generic transferable and professional skills. The student will undertake training in 40Ar/39Ar geochronology at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC), state-of-art imaging techniques in the Advanced Imaging of Materials Facility (Swansea University), in addition to volocanological field techniques. This project will take advantage of the supervisory teams broad expertise in volcanology, geochronology, and correlative imaging.

The candidate will join the well-established and expanding Volcanoes and Tephra research group within the Department of Geography at Swansea University. They will have the opportunity to link their research to state-of the-art facilities within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Swansea University, as well as within SUERC, and work with an international network of collaborators.

Eligibility

Candidates must have at least an upper 2.1 degree or Masters degree in a relevant subject (geosciences, volcanology) or Non-UK equivalent as defined by Swansea University. Additive Manufacturing brings significant opportunities for Manufacturing, in terms of new structural designs, higher performance, and a reduction in weight & material required. However, for this potential to be unlocked, industry requires the creation of high calibre datasets to enable design & product certification.

ASTM International is at the forefront of driving material property generation with the ASTM AM Centre of Excellence (AM CoE), with this PhD supporting the creation of materials properties for critical applications. This will include understanding & evaluating the effect of defects, test methods, and relating the process of creating AM material to the lifing of a component in service. The project will be predominantly based at Swansea University, but liaison and research activities at affiliated universities and partners is envisaged.

The output of this PhD will support Standardisation for Additive Manufacturing, providing the student with global exposure through the extensive ASTM International network. Specialist Additive Manufacturing training will be provided, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with international partners whilst working as a member of the AM CoE.
The ASTM International AM CoE was specifically created in 2018 to accelerate Additive Manufacturing through rapidly closing gaps in Standards and providing Education & Workforce Development, with support from global founding (e.g. The MTC, NASA) and strategic partners. The ASTM has led many significant collaborations within AM, notably the Partner SDO between ISO and ASTM for Standards development.
The AM CoE brings together industry, government, and academia to optimise the AM R&D and standards development processes. By tightly coupling these processes, standards get into the hands of those who need them faster, drastically reducing AM time to market and increasing widespread adoption. Experience covers all AM methods, with strengths in various AM modalities including Powder Bed, Binder Jetting and Direct Energy Deposition.
