The candidate will adopt an exciting interdisciplinary approach that combines field research with laboratory work and ecological modelling. They will collect monitoring data and non-invasive samples for studying helminth prevalence and microbiome characteristics in farmed and semi-domesticated livestock populations in Wales. These empirical data will be analysed and combined with environmental and geographical data to build an understanding of parasite spread and host resilience in variable environments. The student will further capitalise on available species distribution, host-parasite association and remotely sensed ‘big data’ streams to better understand the underpinning drivers that link infectious diseases emergence to host resilience and the livestock-wildlife interfaces in variable environments.

The candidate will join the Biodiversity and Animal Health Lab and the Ecotoxicology Lab at Swansea University, two newly developed thriving groups within the Bioscience Department. Project description:
This is an excellent opportunity to work on ever expanding area of energy storage. This PhD work will focus on the development of advanced single crystal cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. This a collaborative project between Swansea University and Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU), Germany. The selected student will have the opportunity to visit HIU for few months and other collaborators lab.

At Swansea University the PhD will be developed within the Energy Storage group which is part of the newly created Centre of Excellence ‘CAPTURE’ at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. CAPTURE (Circular Applications To Utilise and Retain Energy) is an interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to the development of a circular approach to the manufacture and management of energy storage solutions.

With rapid research and development on the new generation semiconductor materials and devices, discovering new and emerging properties of these materials and devices using both theoretical and experimental approaches is important and timely. For example, piezotronics is a relatively new research topic that uses piezoelectric potential induced by mechanical strains to control/tune the carrier transport of electronic devices. A wide range of tuneable electronic devices have been derived based on this effect, for example piezopotential gated field effect transistors, diodes, strain sensors, and electromechanical memories. For solid state piezoelectric materials, the non-central symmetry of the material is the fundamental cause. The PhD project investigates a variety of piezoelectric semiconductor materials and their applications in electronic devices both theoretically and experimentally. One of the promising materials to be investigated is the Ga2O3 and its alloys. This proposed research is truly multidisciplinary, which demonstrates multi-way coupling such as coupling among piezoelectricity, photoexcitation, and semiconductor. The student will firstly conduct thorough literature review on this topic, followed by in-depth research using state-of-art simulation software and incoming MOCVD facility.

Project description:
Title: Adverse childhood events – What Works to Break the Cycle.

Context: adverse childhood events (ACEs) include: living in an adverse environment with a parent/adult with a mental health or substance abuse problem, or experiencing domestic violence; long-term neglect; abuse including physical, sexual and psychological/verbal abuse. Young people who experience multiple or long-term adverse events are more likely to repeat these behaviours with their own families and experience long-term mental health and physical health conditions.

Aims: to examine young people’s self-reported experience of ACEs and what they report works to support them. To examine the extent to which exposure to ACEs can be detected using existing routine data.

Research questions:

1. Prevalence of and types of ACEs as reported by young people;
2. Prevalence of identified and unidentified ACEs (e.g. those that can and cannot be identified using routine data);
3. What works, according to young people, to help them in terms of school, employment and within their community.
4. What agencies are involved and is there evidence that agency involvement improves outcomes?

Scope: the work is all-Wales in focus and links an all-Wales survey with young people and their routine data including education, health (GP, A&E, hospital, substance abuse dataset), and social care.

Anticipated methods and design: online survey and qualitative interviews with young people aged 16-18. Qualitative analysis of interviews and open-ended survey questions.
