University of Strathclyde Performance Sport Scholarship: Your Path to Global Academic & Athletic Excellence

For talented student-athletes, balancing an elite sporting career with higher education can feel like a game of tug-of-war. The intense training schedules, traveling for competitions, and demanding assignment deadlines frequently clash. Fortunately, the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, bridges this gap seamlessly through its highly prestigious Performance Sport Scholarship Programme.

If you are a high-performing athlete looking to advance your education in the United Kingdom while accessing world-class coaching and funding, this comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about the eligibility criteria, tiers of support, and how to apply.

What is the Performance Sport Scholarship Programme?

The University of Strathclyde Performance Sport Scholarship is designed to help student-athletes pursue a dual career. It ensures that your academic progress doesn’t stall while you strive to reach your athletic peak.

Funded through generous donations from the University of Strathclyde’s alumni community, this program acts as a complete ecosystem of financial, physiological, and academic support. Scholars receive benefits that carry a cash equivalent value of up to £8,500 per year, enabling them to manage training, travel, equipment, and living costs efficiently.

Scholarship Tiers & Benefits Breakdown

Rather than a one-size-fits-all model, Strathclyde implements a three-tiered system (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) depending on your current competitive level.

Regardless of whether you land a Gold or Bronze package, all selected scholars gain access to a network of elite university benefits:

  • Financial Bursary: Up to £2,000 in cash per year (varying by tier) to assist with competition travel, gear, and daily living expenses.

  • Strathclyde Sport Facility Membership: Full, unrestricted access to the university’s state-of-the-art £31 million sports complex.

  • Strength & Conditioning (S&C): Individualized, year-round S&C training sessions (up to three times a week) supervised by elite performance coaches.

  • Physiotherapy & Medical Support: Access to dedicated sports science monitoring and physiotherapy consultations on referral.

  • Academic Flexibility: This is arguably the most vital benefit. The university provides adjustments for extensions, rescheduled exams, or modified learning schedules when your competitive calendar clashes with classes.

  • Branded Kit: Premium, scholar-branded training apparel.

Eligible Sports: Where Does the University Focus?

While the scholarship board welcomes applications from individuals competing in any sport recognized by Sportscotland, the university places a strong strategic focus on its six core Performance Sports:

  1. Badminton

  2. Canoe

  4. Netball (Women’s)

  5. Rugby Union (Men’s and Women’s)

  6. Water Polo (Men’s and Women’s)

Important Caveat: If your sport isn’t listed above, do not panic. Exceptional athletes competing at a high level in Olympic, Commonwealth, or Paralympic disciplines are highly encouraged to apply.

  1. International or Junior International Level: You should ideally be competing at least at the Junior International or Senior International level within your respective sport.
