Is NIN Compulsory for WAEC; www.waecdirect.org

According to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), prospective students with the National Identification Number (NIN) will not be allowed to write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)

The NIN is an important and mandatory number for every person legally living in Nigeria. Due to federal government directives that everyone living in the country should register for their NIN, the NIN has grown in popularity over the years.

The Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) also made it compulsory for students to enrol for NIN before registering for Jamb. Hence, it doesn’t come as a surprise that you’ll have to register for NIN before you can write Waec.

Is NIN compulsory for Waec in 2022/2023?

Last year (2021), Waec’s Council Head of National Office (HNO), Mr Patrick Areghan announced that NIN will become a major requirement for WASSCE registration in 2022/2023. This is in line with the Federal Government’s policy as directed by the Federal Ministry of Education.

This means that as a student who wants to write Waec if you haven’t already enrolled for NIN you’ll not be allowed to write the 2022 Waec examination.

However, due to the recent collapse of the NIMC portal. It’s become difficult for students who want to take part in the 2022 Waec examination since they can’t register or enrol for NIN

According to him, every eligible Nigerian child will be able to write the 2022 Waec examinations. He said that students without NIN won’t be a problem as they have instructed principals of schools to compile and send a list of all the prospective students without NIN to the council.

Once the system is up and running and the student without NIN provide theirs, then it’ll be added to their data.

Will NIN be compulsory for Waec in 2023?

The answer is a resounding Yes! It would have been a “No NIN, No Exam” situation in 2022 but due to the collapse of the NIMC portal which prevented students from registering close to the period the examination was to be held.

Hence both students with NIN and those without NIN were allowed to partake in the 2022 Waec examination.

So what does that tell us? It simply means that NIN is now compulsory for Waec. So if you are planning on taking the examination next year (2023), to save yourself from stress or troubles in future, it’ll be best to register or enrol for your NIN today.

Conclusion

The federal government is trying to curb identity fraud while developing a system that carries accurate data about everyone living in the country. The NIN allows the federal government to track and identify every Nigerian citizen as well as those living legally in the country. Very soon, you’ll be required to use your NIN for activities or things where you’ll have to verify your identity. Therefore if you are yet to enrol for one, you should do so today.
